Marie appointed us a bridal suite, her bedroom with fresh sheets and fluffy new towels for the bride and groom. Wes and I were danced out, laughed out, and partied out. We collapsed into bed after midnight and drifted into a coma-like sleep. I woke up early the next day, wearing my “Wifey” T-shirt. In the living room, I found Wes wearing his matching “Hubby” shirt on the sofa across from Marie.

“Well, there she is,” Marie said. I smoothed back a rumple of hair and took a seat next to her.

“How about opening gifts?” She handed me a notepad and we began making the customary thank-you list for engraved picture frames, plant pots, vases, and photo albums with gold lettering. The cards made us laugh or smile, say very nice or so sweet. Our invitations discouraged gifts, but we appreciated the pile of goodies before us. When everything had been opened and the floor was strewn with gift wrap and tissue paper, Marie stared at me for a long minute, then abruptly took my hand.

“Family can be complicated,” she said, and her eyes were sad little moons. “But you are our family now, and we love you.”
